At Spine Moving, we believe owning and running a business brings with it the responsibility to do right by our coworkers, our customers, our neighbors, and the environment.
Towards that end, we purchase locally sourced products whenever possible, use moving products with recycled content, offer discounted pricing on used boxes, use rubber bands to secure moving pads to furniture instead of tape, and recycle all our scrap cardboard and shrinkwrap.
For the last three years, we've been a member of a group of area residents who work together to turn waste vegetable oil from local restuarants and businesses into high quality, earth-friendly fuel. From April through October, our small fleet of diesel trucks runs on 100% pure biodiesel, otherwise known as B100.
Biodiesel is non-toxic and biodegradable. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, B100 reduces CO2 emisssions by over 75%, carbon monoxide emissions by 50%, cancer causing aromatic compounds by 90%, and completely eliminates sulfur oxides and sulfates, which are major components of acid rain. By some estimates, each gallon of diesel fuel we burn instead of petroleum diesel results in public healthcare savings of $1.40!
Just recently, we started our Trees For Miles Program, which gives customers the chance to make their move carbon neutral by planting trees in Maine's Sebago Lake Watershed area. (Our partner company is based in Maine and Eric's family lives not too far from Sebago Lake.) Trees planted in watershed areas not only absorb carbon as they grow, hence mitigating global warming trends, they also help prevent erosion and keep waterways clean and pristine. If you're interested, please ask us for details when you book your move.
We're always looking for new ways to minimize the negative environmental and health impacts of our business. Please let us know if you've got a suggestion!
